Costa Rica’s Pacific coast regularly sees humidity above 80% during rainy season. Salt air penetrates everything within kilometers of the water. The sun here is not the mild European kind — it is equatorial, relentless, and it fades, cracks, and oxidizes surfaces that were never designed to handle it.
Most furniture sold in North America, Europe, or even in San José is built for temperate conditions. MDF and particle board — the core of most mid-range and even high-end retail furniture — absorbs moisture and swells. Joints fail. Drawers stick. Surfaces delaminate. Wood that isn’t properly treated for tropical humidity warps and cracks, sometimes within a single rainy season.
This is not a worst-case scenario. It is the normal outcome when the wrong materials meet the wrong climate. We see it every year with clients who moved in with furniture from abroad or bought the first thing they found without asking the right questions. Solid Teak & Tropical Hardwoods
Teak’s natural oils make it inherently resistant to moisture, salt air, and insects — without any treatment required. It doesn’t fight the Pacific coast. It belongs to it. Over time it develops a silver-grey patina that most people find more beautiful than the original finish. We also work with cristóbal and treated pine for custom pieces where budget or weight is a factor.
Rattan & Wicker
Lightweight, breathable, and built for warm climates. Natural rattan doesn’t fight humidity — it works with it, flexing slightly rather than cracking under pressure. The handwoven quality of good rattan also means individual strands can be repaired without replacing an entire piece. It is the opposite of disposable furniture.
Outdoor-Grade & Solution-Dyed Fabrics
For upholstered pieces, the fabric matters as much as the frame. Solution-dyed fabrics have color woven through every fiber, not printed on the surface — which means UV exposure doesn’t fade them the way it would standard upholstery. They are also engineered to resist mold and mildew, which matters more than most buyers realize until their first rainy season.

The most common mistake is a rug that’s too small. In a living room, all front legs of the seating should sit on the rug. In a bedroom, extend at least 60cm beyond each side of the bed. When in doubt, go larger — a rug that’s too big is rare, and it’s almost never a problem.

Living on the Pacific coast means humidity, sand, and high foot traffic — whether it’s your primary residence or a rental. A few practical notes before you choose. The same care that goes into choosing what hangs at your windows and the curtains that dress them should go into what’s underfoot — the two are always considered together.
Pile height matters. Low to medium pile rugs are easier to maintain in a coastal environment. They don’t trap moisture, they vacuum cleanly, and they hold up better under daily use. All the rugs in this collection fall in that range.

Jacó sits on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. During rainy season — which runs roughly from May through November — ambient humidity regularly hits 85% and above. That number is not just uncomfortable for humans. It is actively destructive for the wrong furniture materials.
