Natural Luxury,
Protected with Intention.
Costa Rica’s finest woods deserve protection — never at the cost of what makes them extraordinary. This is how we care for every solid wood piece that leaves our workshop.
Home is a feeling. And few things feel more like home than running your hand across a solid wood table and feeling the grain move under your fingers. That feeling is exactly what we set out to protect — not with a glossy coat of plastic that hides it, but with finishes that work with the wood instead of against it. Because here on the Pacific coast, solid wood furniture in Costa Rica lives through direct sun, salt-heavy air and humidity that sits above 80% for months at a time. Building furniture in Jacó means accepting that climate — and designing for it.
No Wood Faces the Coast Alone Forever.
Not even the toughest. Teak carries natural oils that defend it against moisture and rot — it’s why we reach for it so often, and why we call it born from this climate. But the coastal sun slowly turns it silver-grey, and salt air dries out its surface. Some people love that weathered patina. Others want to keep the golden tone of the first day.
So the question was never whether to protect the wood. The question is how — and at what cost to the wood, to your home, and to everything around it.
“Protecting wood isn’t covering it. It’s giving it what it needs to age well.”
Four Woods. Four Characters.
Every species we work with in the workshop arrives with its own natural resilience. Our job is to strengthen it — never to replace it.
Teak
Tectona grandis
Oily, stable and patient. Shrugs off humidity like few woods can and holds its shape as the weather shifts. The natural choice for terraces open to the sea.
Mahogany
Swietenia macrophylla
Fine grain, noble to work. Over the years it deepens into a rich red no stain can imitate. The wood of pieces that get handed down.
Spanish Cedar
Cedrela odorata · Cedro amargo
Light, aromatic, generous under the tools. Its natural scent is part of its defense: insects stay away. Ideal for closets, drawers and bedrooms.
Ron Ron
Astronium graveolens
Dense, hard, dramatic. A dark, high-contrast grain that turns a table into a statement. Few woods carry this much presence.
The grain is the wood’s signature — the right finish reveals it, never hides it
Where the Wood Comes From Matters
Mahogany and Ron Ron are protected species in Costa Rica: since 1997 they have been under a logging ban that forbids cutting them in natural forest. Spanish Cedar is also considered a threatened species.
That’s why we work these woods only from legal, documented sources — plantations, reforestation programs and reclaimed timber. If a piece catches your eye, ask us where it comes from. We’ll tell you its whole story.
Protect Without Changing What It Is.
There’s no perfect finish for everything. There’s the right finish for each piece — depending on where it will live and how it will be used.
Water-based varnishes for hard-working surfaces — dining tables, countertops, desks. They guard against stains, heat and moisture without the harsh solvents of traditional varnishes: less odor in your home, fewer emissions in the workshop, and a tone that won’t yellow with age.
Plant-based oils for wood that needs to breathe. They soak into the fiber instead of sitting on top of it, bring the grain forward and leave the real texture under your hand. And they renew: when the piece asks for it, another coat of oil brings it back to life — no sanding, no starting over.
Natural waxes for the final gesture. A soft barrier against dust and ambient humidity, with a warm, quiet sheen that never looks like plastic.

The same chair, before and after the finish — protected, and still unmistakably wood
“A piece you can renew lives for decades. A piece you can only throw away doesn’t.”
Why This Balance Matters.
Responsible Design
Finishes that don’t seal the wood away forever. A piece that can be repaired, re-oiled and restored is a piece that never ends up in a landfill.
Transparency
On this coast, wood needs protection. What we can choose is the cleanest way to give it — and that’s the one we choose, every time.
Craft Meets Science
Workshop techniques refined over 35+ years, paired with new-generation finishes. Technology in service of tradition — never the other way around.
It’s the same thinking behind every sustainability decision at Riviera: responsibility isn’t what you announce, it’s what you do when no one is watching. And it’s why every custom-made piece from our workshop is built to last decades, not seasons.

Caring for It Day to Day.
A good finish does most of the work. All you need are a few simple habits:
- Wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth, then dry right away.
- Skip cleaners with ammonia, bleach or silicone — they damage the finish and seal the surface.
- Use coasters and trivets, especially on oiled or waxed pieces.
- Rotate decorative objects now and then; the coastal sun marks wood unevenly.
- Outdoors, refresh the oil every few months. Indoors, once a year is usually enough.
