How to Spot
Well-Made Furniture.

In a market full of look-alike pieces, here’s exactly what to look for — construction, materials, and craftsmanship that truly lasts.

In today’s market of look-alike furniture, how can you tell what’s truly well-made versus what will disappoint within a year? At Riviera Home Furniture, we believe in transparency about construction — because furniture should be an investment that endures, not a temporary purchase you’ll replace.

This guide gives you the tools to evaluate any piece — in our showroom or anywhere else. Because a well-informed buyer always ends up with a better home.

Quality reveals itself in the details — joints, materials, and finish that stand up to real life.

The frame is the skeleton.
Everything starts here.

The frame is the foundation of any piece of furniture. A beautiful exterior means nothing if the structure beneath it isn’t built to last. Here’s what to look for:

Solid Hardwood Frames

Kiln-dried hardwood (maple, teak, oak) provides superior stability and longevity. Lift one corner of a chair — it should feel substantial, never lightweight or hollow.

Corner Blocks

Look underneath for triangular corner blocks that reinforce the joints. A piece without them will rack and loosen over time — one with them won’t.

Dovetail Joints in Drawers

The interlocking wedge shape of dovetail joinery is self-tightening under load. It’s one of the clearest signals of quality craftsmanship you can spot with a quick look.

Mortise & Tenon Construction

The gold standard for tables and chairs. A mortise-and-tenon joint — reinforced with glue and screws, never just staples — will outlast any other connection method.

“A well-made frame, properly jointed, is the difference between furniture that lasts a decade and furniture that lasts a lifetime.”

Comfort that endures.
Sit down and stay awhile.

Quality in seating reveals itself over time — which is why the best test is simply to sit down, relax, and pay attention. Here’s what you’re actually feeling:

Foam Density

Ask about it directly. Higher density foam (1.8+ pounds per cubic foot) maintains its shape for years. Low-density foam feels fine on day one and collapses within months.

Spring Suspension

Eight-way hand-tied springs are the gold standard. Well-installed sinuous springs are also excellent. Both should feel consistent across the seat — no soft spots, no hard edges.

Fill Combinations

High-resiliency foam wrapped with down offers both structural support and the kind of luxury that makes you not want to get up. The combination is the benchmark for premium seating.

The difference between good and great seating is almost always in what you can’t see.

Surfaces that live
with you.

The materials you touch daily need to withstand real life — not just look beautiful in a showroom. In Jacó’s coastal climate, this matters even more.

Performance Upholstery Fabrics

Look for solution-dyed fabrics with a double rub count of 15,000+ for residential use. They resist stains, fading, and the coastal humidity that destroys standard upholstery.

Wood Finishes

Smooth, even application with no drips or thin spots. On tabletops, a quality protective topcoat resists heat rings, water marks, and the UV exposure that fades unprotected finishes.

Multiple Finish Layers

One coat of finish is not enough for coastal living. Quality wood pieces receive multiple layers — sanded between each application — for a surface that truly protects the wood beneath.

Ask before you buy.
Every time.

A reputable furniture showroom will answer every one of these questions without hesitation. If they can’t — or won’t — that tells you something important.

Your quality checklist
  • What is the frame made of?
  • How are the joints constructed?
  • What is the cushion foam density?
  • Is this fabric rated for humid or coastal climates?
  • What is the double rub count on the upholstery?
  • How many layers of finish does the wood receive?
  • What are the care and maintenance instructions?
  • What is the warranty on this piece?
The Riviera Standard

Quality shouldn’t be a mystery.

At Riviera Home Furniture, our team is trained to answer every one of these questions knowledgeably. We’re proud to show you the inside story of our pieces — sometimes literally, with samples that reveal the construction layers beneath the surface.

Visit our showroom to compare construction methods side by side. Feel the difference in the frames. Test the cushions. Examine the finishes. We believe in furniture that not only looks beautiful on day one — but continues to serve and delight for years to come.
